All of us are but two missed mortgage or rent payments away from being homeless. That sobering fact was pointed out to me by homeless advocate and street musician Neo, who is homeless himself. I got to know Neo when I went with photographer Carol Mac on a quest to seek out and photograph homeless dogs, with the permission (of course) of their equally homeless owners. I had written a song from the perspective of just such a dog, following a chance encounter with one on the streets of Oxford just before last Christmas that made me think much more about the appallingly large number of people who sleep at best in draughty shop doorways, often with a dog as their sole companion. And now I wanted to turn that song into a fundraising music video.
I recorded the song, ‘Tangled Locks and Matted Fur’, in London, and it was there and in Oxford that photographer Carol and I scoured the streets during the recent bitter winter to get the shots we needed for the video to go with the song.
