Much as it grieves me to see them bite the dust, my almost-new pair of Wrangler brown leather boots were declared unrepairable this afternoon by the expert stitcher recommended to me by the nice chap at Timpson’s on account of the lining becoming so torn at the heel that my right foot became trapped in the boot last night and could only be released by some deft work with my late grandfather’s horse-head walking stick and a wooden spoon.
Buying boots online with no chance to try them on first is a risky business, but until this unfortunate incident, this particular pair had been one of my more successful eBay footwear purchases. On the outside they still look completely fit for purpose, so I have vaguely considered somehow recycling the beautiful brown leather – and maybe I still will. Or maybe the sun has indeed set on my Wranglers and I’ll just have to steel myself to lob them into the communal street bin. At least it’ll give me good reason to resume my pleasurable quest to locate the perfect pair of boots on eBay (or, of course, in TK Maxx…).
There’s a pair on eBay tonight, actually – in black and white cow hide. I love ’em, but I’m not sure I’d have the guts to wear them anywhere but on stage… Or would I??
