Tangled Locks and Matted Fur
Homelessness is tragically reaching epidemic proportions in many towns and cities across the UK and throughout the world. It was a chance encounter with a loose dog on the streets of Oxford just before Christmas a few years ago that inspired me to write a song about homelessness from the perspective of a homeless person’s dog. Photographer Carol Mac and I scoured the streets of Oxford and central London during the bitter winter of 2017/2018 to get shots of street dogs – with their owners’ permission – to make into a video to go with the song.
I’m going to be very honest here and admit that I got it wrong six years ago when I called the song ‘Tangled Locks and Matted Fur’. What we actually found on those streets were immaculately groomed dogs whatever condition their owners were in. It was always the case that the people we met and talked with put their pets before themselves. And so on 14 July 2023 I sat down in my cabin on a cold and rainy afternoon and re-recorded the song, now titled ‘Tangled Locks, Beloved Fur’…
